What the Heck?

Recently I have become somewhat more politically active. In thinking about this I have decided that, although part of it may be my age and the fact that I have experienced the best and the worst of years politically, most is due to the political climate at this time.

I have signed several petitions lately and written to several congressmen and state legislators. I think that is what riles me the most. I received a response from a US Senator signed, “God bless you”, an email from a state legislator signed “In God We Trust”. I found a card wishing me a “blessed day” in my mailbox, without any postage, signed by my postal carrier. I can’t go to the grocery store without being accosted by some “missionary” passing out religious leaflets and the clerk who checks me out wishing me a blessed day. What the heck? Do people have no decorum? What if I stood on the corner and passed out leaflets about atheism or made signs wishing everyone a secular day? How long before someone would call the cops and I would be removed from the property.

Be religious if you want, believe in fairytales, sky daddy and holy ghosts but please don’t bother me when I go about my day, please don’t try to bless my day, and most of all do not use my tax dollars to promote your religion.

Separation of Church and State

Last night I attended a simulcast event from an organization I found through a local atheist chapter. It was facinating! I came away ready to become an activist.

Don't know how much time I'll have for it but my first act is to ask all of you to go to First Freedom First and read up on what is going on in this great country of ours.

Then, please, sign the petition.

“Who cares, if the founding fathers were believers or not?”

Actually, I don’t care one way or the other. But it comes into play when we begin the conversation about the separation of church and state. Our founding fathers were wise to create a constitution that provides for such a state. They had lived under the rule of the Church of England and they were well aware of the problems created when church and state are mixed.

You asked how it affects my life and the answer is in several ways;
• First I am a patriotic citizen but when the pledge of allegiance to the United States of America is recited “under god” is injected, not in the original by the way. The Pledge of Allegiance to the United States Flag
• In many schools children are never taught the science of evolution. Whether you believe it or not, children should be taught science not religion
• I am an atheist and I pay taxes which are used to promote religion Americans United: Home Page
• Churches are exempt from taxes when they often use the pulpit to promote political values Preacher Against Romney
• Political leaders are heavily influenced by the Christian right which promotes an agenda with which I don’t agree.
• And then if religion is a part of policy, which religion? Christian? Judaism? Islam? Mormon? Scientology? Wicken? They are all represented in the US population.

We must, as a nation, remain secular; our freedom depends on it.
