God is Busy

Read this on another site and in light of what is going on in my life right now just had to repost.

"A United States Marine was attending some college courses between assignments. He had completed missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. One of the courses had a professor who was an avowed atheist, and a member of the ACLU.

One day the professor shocked the class when he came in. He looked to the ceiling and flatly stated, "GOD if you are real then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you exactly 15 minutes." The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop. Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed, "Here I am GOD, I'm still waiting." It got down to the last couple of minutes when the Marine got out of his chair, went up to the professor, and cold-cocked him; knocking him off the platform. The professor was out cold. The Marine went back to his seat and sat there, silently. The other students were shocked and stunned, and sat there looking on in silence. The professor eventually came to, noticeably shaken, looked at the Marine and asked, "What in the world is the matter with you? Why did you do that?"

The Marine calmly replied, "GOD was too busy today protecting American soldiers who are protecting your right to say stupid stuff and act like an idiot. So He sent me."

The classroom erupted in cheers!

It sure hits all the talking points, doesn't it? Military, academia, atheism, and violence as an answer to difficult questions.

I recently got an email from a student of mine. She was concerned that since I teach a Philosophy class, I would be an atheist, and she was prepared to either drop my class or "turn me in." Apparently, she had a Psychology professor in the past that asked her to examine her beliefs, and it made her very uncomfortable. So now she's on a mission to root out atheists in academia and make sure they all end up losing their jobs.

...and a response... (I particularly like this well stated response)

The story is messed up in many ways.

First, as mentioned by others, the violent act is at odds with the ideals (notice I said "ideals") that are supposedly espoused by Christians and other religionists.

Second, it makes "GOD" look like an incompetent boob, because: (1) he can't multi-task by handling an atheist professor while simultaneously protecting "American" soldiers (forget about non-American soldiers); (2) He doesn't do a very good job of protecting soldiers; and (3) if he really wanted to protect soldiers, he should have prevented the war from breaking out in the first place.

Third, it doesn't pass the smell test. These types of stories all have the same feel to them. I call it the "Reader's Digest feel" because they always sound like something that's a bit too Norman Rockwellish and cartoonish to be true. If anyone had really punched out a professor with enough force to knock him out cold, the professor would be needing serious hospitalization. This story has the professor coming to like something out of the TV shows or cartoons where people are getting hit on the head to knock them unconscious (like it's some kind of on/off switch) and they always come to with nothing more than a headache. It doesn't work that way. When enough force is applied to knock someone unconscious, things like paralysis, broken jaws, broken noses, fractured cheekbones, concussions, etc., are the typical results. The Marine would have been looking at criminal and civil charges.

Finally, if the American soldiers are supposedly "over there" protecting the First Amendment, why the hell is the Marine using violence back home to render it meaningless??"

I recently learned that my youngest daughter has breast cancer. She is Mormon. The whole ward is praying and fasting tomorrow, in her honor. I hope their god is not too busy to listen and act.

Your topic has so many problems it's not funny. Better yet, not problems but misunderstandings about God and why things happen.

Let me first start with this. If anyone had really punched out a professor with enough force to knock him out cold, the professor would be needing serious hospitalization.

This is not true, You added also about how people would get broken nose, or various other things, This is simply not true.

Right now the next UFC Ultimate fighting championship will be number 114, I have seen every ufc fight to date. You can go to UFC.com and verify everything I say. But one fighter named Steve Carwin has 13 fights in the UFC, All of his 13 fights have ended my knock out in the first round, and 12 of those fights have ended in less than 2 minutes, the last one took about 4 minuets because the guy he was fighting kept baking away or circling him.

His next fight is in July and he is fighting Brock Lesnor, I hope Brock gets knocked out in the first 2 minutes. Now not one of these guys after awaking had any serious damage or broken anything.

Now I think you will blow it off as these guys are either heavy weight or pro's. But that also is simply not true. I have seen many more fights and guys get knock out with one punch and never have serious damage.

Now I will agree that he would get sued, But other wise he could get knocked out with out a problem. Rick b

Now lets move onto the issue of God being to busy to help.

Gods not so busy he cannot help, or he is not so weak he could stop all these problems.

Go back and read your Bible better, Jesus told those who follow him, their will be wars and rumors of wars, these things will happen. Matthew 24:6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all [these things] must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

Mark 13:7 And when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled: for [such things] must needs be; but the end [shall] not [be] yet.

Luke 21:9 But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end [is] not by and by.

Now the Bible goes onto say,
James 4:1 From whence [come] wars and fightings among you? [come they] not hence, [even] of your lusts that war in your members?

James 4:2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

James 4:3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume [it] upon your lusts.

James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

These things happen because we lust after things and kill to get them.

Now you say that if the story of the marine were true he is setting a bad example by not showing love and using violence.

I know you wont like this, but if you read your Bible God is a just and loving God who does show grace, But on the other side of the coin, God is a warrior, God first declared was upon Satan for what he did.

Jesus told his disciples to buy a sword, Luke 22:36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take [it], and likewise [his] scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

Luke 22:37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.

Luke 22:38 And they said, Lord, behold, here [are] two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.

You read accounts of Jesus and his disciples speaking with Roman soldiers, you never see any of them telling the soldiers to leave the military.

Read Romans chapter 13, it talks about the government using the sword to punish the evil. Romans 13:1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

Romans 13:2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

Romans 13:3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

Romans 13:4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to [execute] wrath upon him that doeth evil.

Romans 13:5 Wherefore [ye] must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.

Romans 13:6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.

Like it or not, life will be filled with death and violence due to the fall of Adam and our sinful nature. Rick b

I think it is said this person wants to see you lose your job because she has her belief challenged. Me, I'm in school and at some point I will be taking 6 weeks of psychology and I would gladly take on the professions and challenge them to examine their faith. I think its good to have our beliefs challenged. You challenge me and I you.

I was never in the military but my dad was, and I have a very good friend of over 20 years who was an ex-Vietnam vet. I suspect many of them are tired of defending us to only have these people say and do such stupid stuff, these people have the right to say and do stupid stuff, and the marine has the right to return stupid for stupid. Does it make it right? No, But it just gets frustrating for these guys to defend morons like the teacher.

Well I believe the Mormon god is a false god that does not exist and that the mormon church is leading people straight into hell. But that aside, even people who follow the God I believe exists and is the only true God sometimes never receive healing and die. Even Paul in the Bible, while he laid hands upon some people and they were healed, said he left some behind sick who were not healed. And Paul himself said he prayed 3 times for healing about a possible eye issue and God said no. That does not mean I will walk away or cease to believe. Rick b
